When I spotted this door on the other side of the hall from my room this morning, I immediately did as instructed. Then I took pictures of some of the interesting rocks forming the walls of the Shamrock and bid the motel adieu. This place is a winner which will be attracting Route 66 travelers for a long time.

I had picked another place from Mike Curtis' Route 66 videos for breakfast today, but when I looked into it yesterday afternoon I learned it was only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Today is Wednesday. Christina was working the desk when I checked in and mentioned my recent disappointing discovery. She confirmed Mike's take on how good it was and my understanding of its limited hours. She then suggested an alternative. At the time I actually thought it was a suggestion for dinner, but seeing that it is open until 7:00 PM just two days a week (Fri & Sat), and closes at 2:00 PM every other day, that was probably a misunderstanding on my part. Anyway, I had dinner at a regional chain and am now following the suggestion.

The staff at Country Skillet Cafe is among the friendliest I have ever encountered, and they serve a great mushroom and cheddar omelet. Great call, Christina.

This is where Mike spent a Saturday morning, and maybe I will too someday.

I moved onto the expressway at Bourbon. As I neared St. Louis, I decided it was time for another Ted Drewes treat. Having stopped at the Chippewa location on the way west, I thought visiting the South Grand location today would be appropriate. I was totally unaware that this store closes down every winter. This year it did that on August 23.

I could, of course, have driven the five or so miles to the other store, but I wasn't that set on custard so I just continued east toward home. When I left the Shamrock, I thought the drive home would likely be a two day affair, and I even did a little online motel shopping in western Indiana. But nothing clicked, and I somehow avoided time consuming stops at roadside attractions until I was too close to home to justify another motel bill.
